3.3.3 Elemental Glyph Choices

23 03 2010

A while back I wrote up an Elemental Shaman guide and it has gone to pieces with all the changes since then. Back then, T7 was in full swing, Ulduar was sitting out in front like a fresh apple. Things were so stagnate for the Elemental Shaman world. 3.3.3 is here today and it looks like there are no Shaman changes… oh wait, what does that line say right there?

  • Flame Shock: The damage-over-time component of this ability can now produce critical strikes and is affected by spell haste.

Oh really? So… now there is no need to have the Flame Shock glyph. Well, maybe if you want 60% increased damage upon critical ticks from Flame Shock. I think now would be a good time to evaluate these glyph options that are at stake.

Glyph of Lightning Bolt: This glyph is gonna give you 4% increased damage from Lightning Bolt, our most heavily used spell. So, this one is pretty much mandatory at this point.

Glyph of Totem of Wrath: When you drop Totem of Wrath, have a bonus 84 SP on the house for the next 5 minutes. Pull up that totem? Still got 30% of that buff. Move out of range of the Totem? Still got that 30%. So, when in range of the totem, you’ll have a boosted 364 SP from that quirky little guy. Mandatory.

Now on to the ones that aren’t so mandatory… a bit of a choice comes into play here.

Glyph of Lava: Increases the spellpower to Lava Burst by 10% of your spellpower. As gear increases, this glyph becomes more valuable. Though, it only benefits one spell. In a raid situation, you can have anywhere from 3500 to 5000 SP (going through all raiding levels), so an extra 350 to 500 extra SP given to this spell. A nice jump in damage… but it is still affecting only one spell on an 8sec cooldown. If you are gonna be turreting, it is a viable option.

Glyph of Flametongue Weapon: You know that nice SP weapon enhancement you put on your weapon? Yeah? How’d you like to have 2% extra crit while it is up? Pretty nice, eh? 2% extra crit will decrease mana consumption (Clearcasting procs, in turn giving a 10% increased damage through Elemental Oath talent), will no longer proc Elemental Oath as it is getting the Moonkin Aura treatment. It also affects all your spells. Flame Shock, Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Lava Burst (if your Flame Shock had fallen off, which is a no-no)… one of the other buttons that we push? Another good glyph choice, though it doesn’t scale with gear.

Glyph of Elemental Mastery: When they changed this to a 15% Haste, it became a lot more attractive. A mini-Heroism/Bloodlust on a 3minute CD, with a decreasing CD on a set bonus (T10)? Pretty awesome. Want it 30 seconds sooner? Take this glyph. Once again, it affects all spells and becomes more attractive if you have the T10 2pc. You’ll have to cast 15 less LBs and CLs to get this to come back up again. Though, it is a nice CD, it might not be good for everyone. Consider it if you want.

Glyph of Flame Shock: Now that your Flame Shock is affected by Haste and can crit without needing to be modified by this glyph, you can now enjoy an extra 60% critical damage. Since it should be having an uptime of nigh 100%, especially if you have the 264 Elemental Totem (giving 220 Haste when fully stacked from Flame Shock ticks), it should be given ample chance to crit. Now, since this is only influencing one spell, it might not be a viable candidate, but with its uptime and the mass amount of crit that Elemental Shamans carry around, this might end up being a nice DPS increase.

All in all, choose what you want. You can go cookie cutter, but now that we have 1 glyph slot open, there is a bit more wiggle room. If you find yourself moving around a lot, Elemental Mastery or Flame Shock might be the way to go. If you are turreting, you will find that Flametongue Weapon or Lava is the right glyph for you. Go out and experiment. Worse comes to worst, you are out a few gold (if the glyph market is crummy like it is on my server).
